How Does Eating Fruit Help You Lose Fat?

The fitness industry is known for many myths and unfortunately, one of the biggest ones is the need to completely avoid fruit when dieting down. The theory is that fructose blunts your ability to burn fat.
Firstly, only a small percent of your daily calories and carbohydrate intake are going to come from fruit therefore the actual amount of fructose you're consuming will be relatively small anyway.
Secondly, lets not get away from the fact that losing body fat comes down to sustaining a calorie deficit - fruit is generally very low in calories but abundant in essential micro nutrients (key vitamins, minerals, trace elements and digestive enzymes). As a result it is a great way to gain a lot of your vital nutrients without consuming many calories which can be difficult on a energy restricted diet. It is also rich in fibre which helps with digestion and controlling hunger.
Third, many people find fruit as a great way to help with cravings for sweet foods, without over indulging.
In my opinion, fruit offers many benefits with very limited negatives - anybody concerned about fructose content from natural sources would need to be consuming a lot for it to be a real issue. Yes, fructose only replenishes liver glycogen and not muscle glycogen (like sweet potato or rice) but this isn't a negative thing provided the rest of your diet is structured in the correct way.
In summary I am a big proponent of consuming fresh fruit for health reasons no matter the goal and I always include it for my clients.
