Supplements are just that they supplement a healthy lifestyle and are not a substitute for a poor one
So why, if we lead a healthy lifestyle do we need to use supplements at all?
Unfortunately today we live in a world that contains many more toxins than ever in the atmosphere, water and in the soil. So, not only does our food contain a lot less nutrients than it used to because of poor soil conditions. It has been contaminated through chemicals in both the water and the air
Our food choices today are also different to what we were originally evolved to eat and although we can survive on these foods our optimum levels of many essential minerals and vitamins are compromised
Geography can also be a factor as with vitamin D if you live in Europe and live north of Lisbon your optimum levels of this most important vitamin will be compromised due to less than adequate amounts of sunshine
In the context of weight loss a less than optimal kevel of many minerals and nutrients can lead to increased body fat storage
So what supplements should we take?
Fish oil
Fish oil contains 2 main fats EPA and DHA, these fats have been shown in research to have many benefits in the body they include increased metabolic rate, improved fat burning, better glucose and insulin tolerance, reduced risk of high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes
Vitamin D
To have less than optimal levels of vitamin D can lead to
Loss of muscular strength and lean mass
Higher risk of numerous cancers
Lower immunity
High blood pressure
Neurological problems (memory and concentration problems, depression, mood changes)
Higher risk of diabetes and/or insulin resistance and type II diabetes
Protein
Most of your protein should come from whole food sources meat, fish, poultry and eggs sometimes this is not possible and after workout it is better to take a protein supplement
Green drinks
As mentioned above, the nutrients and minerals contained in our fruits and vegetables are decreasing. It can also be a challenge to ensure we are eating enough fruit and vegetables on a daily basis so a green drink is an excellent way to bridge the shortfall.
Multi vitamin
The modern diet often leads to small deviations of certain vitamins and minerals. These deficiencies can slow your metabolism and impact your ability to burn fat – among other things. And a good multivitamin can help fix that.
There are many supplements that, when taken either on their own or in combination, can help improve health or reduce fat from certain problem areas of the body. Using diet, training, lifestyle and supplements can improve hormonal imbalances and so reduce body fat.
