Ways to be Ruthless with Stress and Achieve Peace of Mind

It’s 6 a.m. and your alarm goes off.

You blink.

Suddenly it’s 6 p.m., the kids need dinner, the dog needs to be walked, your boss is still waiting on those reports…

Where on earth did the day go?

If this sounds familiar, there’s a good chance your hectic lifestyle is causing you stress and anxiety.

Besides making you feel perpetually rushed and out of control, it can also affect your ability to eat well, move regularly, and get a good night’s sleep.

Some helpful advice: Grab your schedule and a marker pen… and get ruthless!

Specifically, try an exercise called three Ds: Delete, Delegate, Do less. (Tip: Using a red pen makes this exercise even more satisfying.)

How to Do It

Before you start: Get clear on exactly how you’re spending your time- go granular.

Now you’re ready to scrutinise.

Step 1. Delete one or more activities.

Do you have obligations that aren’t actually necessary? Or habits (TV, TikTok) that don’t serve you anymore?

What would happen if a given task doesn’t get done at all? What might be the worst outcome?

Remember: Delete at least one activity!

Step 2. Delegate whatever you can.

Consider each task and ask yourself, “Who else can do this?”

Could your partner pack the lunches? Could a neighbour cut the grass? Can your kids fold (ahem, “fold”) their own clothes?

If you off-load something, what’s the worst that could happen?

Again, try to delegate at least one thing!

Step 3. Do less.

Challenge yourself: What’s “good enough” for this thing? If you’re used to shooting for A+, then what would an “A-” or a “B+” look like?

I'm not suggesting you stop striving for excellence in the tasks that really matter.

Rather, figure out where you spend unnecessary time trying to meet a self-imposed expectation that neither you nor anyone else really cares about.

Now do less of that 😀

And that’s it.

The idea, of course, is to audit your life and look for ways to remove things that are needlessly contributing to your overall stress load.

These are often tasks, habits, and responsibilities that go unquestioned and unchecked for weeks, months, even years.

Why does this happen?

Because you take on too much yourself, don’t ask for help, and don’t consider alternative solutions.

Feel relatable? Embrace the 3 Ds!
